Turn hazard waste into valuable treasure by a "chemomimetic" biocatalytic system

The Enzyme Engineering Group, directed by Professor LI Shengying at Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), together with the research team led by Professor LIU Shuangjiang at Institute of Microbiology, CAS, announced that they found a novel cresol biodegradation pathway in bacterium. This pathway could serve not only in biological degradation of environmentally hazardous compounds, but also in bioactive ingredients of Chinese medicine plants. In the daily life, everyone would be troubled by various wastes. These wastes may cause the serous environmental pollution. The utilization of waste has become the hot spot of scientific research.

Genetic Engineering Makes Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs Greener

A research team from Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), cooperated with Hisun Pharm which was the world's largest lovastatin/simvastatin producer, developed a single-step microbial production process for monacolin J by engineering of an industrial lovastatin-producing A. terreus strain. With the aging population, the risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) popular trend has obviously raised. CVD has seriously threated the residents' health which death rate is much higher than the other disease, such as tumor. Cholesterol-low...

A Series of New Progress in Bio-Based Hybrid Materials

The Green Low-Carbon Materials Group, led by Prof. JIANG Yijun from the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), has made a series of progress in the design and preparation of bio-based hybrid materials. The related research results have been published in the ACS Nano (DOI:10.1021/acsnano.6b05780, DOI:10.1021/acsnano.7b01221) and have been selected as "Editor Choice". Bio-based materials are kind of new materials synthesized by biological or chemical methods based on renewable resources. They are environmentally friendly, renewable and biodegradable, which are the frontier of materials science research.

Battery Works in the Mariana Trench

A research team from the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), has developed the solid state battery system (namely QIBEBT-I) as the only power supply assembled on the lander Wanquan and brought to the Mariana Trench. The lander realized 9 times of successful dives, of which 6 times down to 10,000 m depth (maximum dive depth of 10,901 m). The cumulative working time and the longest continuous running time of QIBEBT-I were 134 hours and 20 hours, respectively. Human never stop nature exploration especially under extreme conditions. The Mariana Trench is the deepest part (10,994 m) of the world's oceans, located in the western Pacific Ocean. The development of full ocean depth expedition equipments requi...
