Microalgae, those algae that cannot be seen by the naked eye, produce oil that can be used in biofuel products. These biofuels offer promise as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels, but scientists have lacked a full understanding of the chemical reactions that would allow these microalgae to be useful. A team of researchers have discovered a connection between blue light and oil synthesis in the microalgae. This finding has major implications in the potential for microalgae to be used in the production of biofuels. The research team from the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, published their findings on 29th March in Nature Communications. Microalgae, algae that cannot be seen by the naked eye, absorb carbon dioxide and produce oils that can be used as biofuels. These biofuels, which can be carbon negative, offer promise as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels. However, the b...
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries offer great potential for use in energy storage systems because of their large energy capacity. However, safety problems related to their thermal behavior continue to be a concern for scientists. A team of researchers, led by scholars from the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has engaged in a study of the thermal runaway routes of Li-S batteries that should prove helpful in addressing the safety issues of next generation batteries.

Solar cells can directly convert light energy into electrical energy through photoelectric effect or photochemical effect. Metal halide perovskites solar cells (PSCs) have attracted tremendous attention, owing to their excellent optical and electrical properties. Among these metal halide PCSs, cesium (Cs)-based PSCs are very promising due to excellent thermal stability. However, Cs-based perovskite devices suffer from severe open-circuit voltage loss, which limits the advantage of the wide-bandgap and seriously affects their power conversion efficiency (PCE). To combat these problems, a research team from the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has proposed a strategy to accelerate carrier transport and collection in Cs-based PSCs and improve the device performance. A research team has devised a ramanome-based technique to catch when pathogens are still present and metabolically active in a tooth about to undergo root canal treatment even after they appear to have stopped growing. The innovation should limit re-infections while reducing the amount of disinfectant required, in turn dialling down the chance of side-effects.
The technique and its application to both bacterial infection and fungal infection are reported, by scientists from Qingdao Municipal Hospital, Qingdao University and Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), across a pair of papers appearing in the Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology on February 23 and the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy on January 17.

A group from Extended Energy Big Data and Strategy Research Center (EEBD&SRC), Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) addressed the interprovincial carbon transfer in China along thermal coal trade flow and coal power transmission flow with the Chinese provinces as spatial nodes based on the GIS-LCA methodology proposed by the group (J. Clean Prod., 2021, 323, 129113). The work was published in Journal of Cleaner Production on February 3, 2022. China has committed to reach its peak carbon emissions as soon as possible before 2030, and to strive to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Fully assessing the spatial carbon transfer associated with energy production and consumption activities he...
