Microalgae Biotechnology Group
Introduction

Microalgae Biotechnology Group focused on the R&D of key technologies for bio-manufacture of fuel, food, feed, feedstock and environmental bioremediation with microalgae/microbes. The research interests include the screening and genetic modifying of microalgae/microbe strains with excellent engineering properties, constructing efficient process for mass cultivation with multi-scale regulation, developing new bioreactor concept and suitable unit equipment. The research will attempt to solve the efficiency and cost problems of mic microalgae/microbes industrial process and serves the national strategy of "Peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality".

Director of Center/Group
Prof. LIU Tianzhong
Professor LIU Tianzhong obtained his doctoral degree in 1998 in the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He has been devoting to developing original work on microalgae biotechnology, bioreactor design/simulation and process engineering of microalgae with applications in fuels, chemicals, food, nutraceuticals by CO2 fixation. He first noticed the filamentous oleaginous microalgae Tribonema sp, and proposed the concept of filamentous engineering microalgae. He also developed the microalgae biofilm attached cultivation technology which demonstrates high biomass productivity and water saving. Dr. LIU constructed a technology of palmitoleic acid (omega-7 fatty acid) production with heterotrophic fermentation of Tribonema sp, or Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Professor LIU has accumulated high respect in microalgae research. He has joined the Editorial Boards of some international scientific journals and is also the peer reviewer of the journals, national and international funds. He is also the associate director of the Key Laboratory of Biofuels of CAS.
