Abstract:

Biofuel production and consumption has risen to 18 billion gallons per year (68 billion liters per year) in the US. Most is due to the production of ethanol from corn (maize) feedstock. Cellulosic biofuel from corn stover, wheat straw, switchgrass and municipal refuse has been slow to develop. Advantages and disadvantages of biofuel production and the causes for delay of cellulosic biofuel are discussed, and the future of the industry is debated.
