A Hong Kong Polymer Chemist Speaks on QIBEBT Bioenergy and Bioprocess Forum
Prof. TANG Benzhong from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was invited to visit the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and to speak on the "QIBEBT Bioenergy and Bioprocess Forum" on Jan 13.
A lecture entitled “The Trilogy of Creative Research” was delivered by Prof. TANG, who taught postgraduates and young researchers how to promote creative studies collaboratively and intelligently. In his lecture, he first emphasized the basic problems of “why we do research, what research to do, and how to do research”. Then based on the philosophy of a famous Chinese scholar WANG Guowei, he proposed the trilogy of creative research, namely discovering new phenomena and identifying new problems, hypothesizing new concepts and proposing new models, and exploring new applications and pioneering new fields. During the talk, Prof. TANG gave many inspiring examples of Nobel laureates and shared his own research experiences as well.
Prof. TANG’s research mainly focused on polymer chemistry, and has been widely recognized by the concept of “Aggregation Induced Emission (AIE)" he creatively proposed. He was elected as a member of CAS in 2009. Prof. LU Xuefeng, the deputy director general of QIBEBT, hosted this lecture. Prof. TANG's visit is expected to facilitate potential collaborations between HKUST and QIBEBT.
