Two Biorefinery and Biomaterials Experts Speak at QIBEBT
Prof. Adriaan van HEININGEN from University of Maine in US was invited to attend the “2016 International Distinguished Expert Forum”, and Prof. NI Yonghao from University of New Brunswick in Canada was also invited to give a talk at Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on Nov 11.
On the forum, Prof. van HEININGEN delivered a lecture entitled “Ethanol Xylosides Formation during Ethanol Organosolv Pulping”, and Prof. NI gave a presentation entitled “Integrated Forest Biorefinery and Its Application to Pre-hydrolysis Kraft (PHK) Dissolving Pulp Manufacturing”. They introduced the state of pulping-based biorefinery in US and Canada, respectively, and the practical issues during integrated forest biorefinery from different sides. They also briefly introduced University of Maine and University of New Brunswick respectively. In addition, they gave valuable advice regarding academic problems and graduate education with young scientists and students of QIBEBT.
Prof. van HEININGEN is the J. Larcom Ober Chair in University of Maine and the professor in Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, as well as the Finland distinguished professor (2007-2014). He is a fellow of TAPPI in US, and a fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is an internationally recognized pioneer in the fields of biorefinery and the development of new biomaterials and chemicals. Prof. NI is the Chair and professor in Department of Chemical Engineering in University of New Brunswick. He is also the professor in Department of Chemistry and the director of the Limerick Pulp and Paper Centre. Prof. NI has held a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Pulp & Paper Science and Engineering since 2002. He is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Prof. NI has been the recipient of a total of 31 awards from Canada, USA, China and Australia, and he also provided consulting services to 26 international companies on over 40 projects.
Associate Prof. LI Bin, the leader of Lignocelluloses Biorefinery Group in QIBEBT, hosted this forum. This visit is expected to facilitate potential collaborations between University of Maine, University of New Brunswick, and QIBEBT.
