Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering Speaks on QIBEBT International Expert Forum
Prof. Ying ZHENG, the Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering from the University of Edinburgh, was invited to the “International Expert Forum” of the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences on Jul 26.
On the forum, Ying ZHENG gave a lecture titled “Integration of Biomass and Petroleum and Synthesis of Nano Dispersed Catalyst for Deoxygenation”. The talk was started by a mutually concerned question: Can the petroleum-based industry and bio-based industry go hand in hand in the transition to post-petroleum era? Ying ZHENG introduced her recent progress on the integration of renewable materials with petroleum for either improving the quality of petroleum fuels or promoting the conversion of biomass to biohydrocarbons. Her first example showed that glycerol was applied to refine FCC slurry oil, and the paraffin contents of slurry oil was increased by about 35wt% and the multiple-ring aromatics were reduced by half. A second example demonstrated the thermolysis of lignin cellulosic materials in heavy petroleum oil, and biomass was directly converted to paraffin and light aromatics, which were chemically similar to petroleum oil. The lecture was followed by warm discussions, since it has given the researchers and students at QIBEBT brand-new inspirations.
Ying ZHENG's visit is expected to facilitate potential collaborations between the University of Edinburgh and QIBEBT.
