QIBEBT and Samsung Collaboration on DNA Logic Gates

Professor YANG Renqiang at Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT) won the grant of Global Research Outreach (GRO) Program issued by Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT). The collaborative project, titled “Design and Fabrication of Nanosized Logic Gates with the Fluorene Derivative (FD)/DNA Probes and their Application”, has been officially initiated on February 1, 2013 at the QIBEBT.

The Principal Investigator of this interdisciplinary project, Prof. YANG, is the group leader of the Advanced Organic Functional Materials (AORM) at the QIBEBT. The proposal and design of this project combines AORM’s research background on organic chemistry, materials, device and molecular biology. Through the collaboration, the YANG’s research group will design and synthesize new organic fluorescent molecules, then to construct nano-sized biological logic gates through covalent binding with DNA in which the changes of fluorescent wavelength and intensity will be acted as output.

On the project kickoff meeting, the representative of SAIT China, Manager Meng Jinyu introduced the orientation and prospect of the Samsung and GRO program. Ms. YANG Xutong at R&D Department introduced the overview of the QIBEBT. Both sides discussed the detailed cooperative plan, and clarified the scientific focal that will be worked out in the very near future. They also reached consensus on the sustainable collaboration.

After the meeting, the representatives visited the Large Instrument Platform of the open laboratory at the QIBEBT and the labs of AOFM group.

Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology is a major research institute of the Samsung Electronics and focuses on the frontier technology and innovation. GRO program is more inclined to the most promising technology inthe next five to ten years, which also promotes the tangible and high-efficiency cooperation between SAMSUNG and research organizations. “Biomolecule-based Nanocontroller and Interface” is one of the prior fields to support in 2012.
