    QIBEBT Profile


    The Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was cofounded by CAS, the provincial government of Shandong and the municipal government of Qingdao in 2006. On August 1, 2011, CAS and the Qingdao Municipal Government signed an agreement, marking the official launch of the second phase of construction.  

    QIBEBT is one of China’s primary national research institutions for renewable energy and green materials, focusing mainly on research and development of the resources, technologies, products and processes for bio-based energy and materials. The institute is devoted to providing systematic and sustainable solutions to the nation’s bioenergy needs by integrating science, technology, and engineering in the fields of industrial biology, green chemical technology, and process engineering. 

    QIBEBT focuses on bio-based materials, applied energy technology, and marine low-carbon technology. The main headquarters of the institute is located in Qingdao’s Laoshan District. The institute also has two demonstration areas in the cities of Pingdu and Changyi, respectively. In addition, QIBEBT has established the Qingdao CSQE Company and the Qingdao Innovation and Incubation Center for Industry Technology of CAS to promote technology transfer.  

    QIBEBT researchers have made significant progress in cyanobacterial photosynthesis, single cell technology, thermophilic bacterial functional genomics and microevolution, biosensors and microbial fuel cells, microbial-directed synthesis of bio-based aliphatic chemicals, protein backbone chemical shifts, and lithium-air battery electrode materials. Pilot tests have commenced for bioenergy, biomaterials, and biochemical products such as microalgal nerve acid, microalgae biodiesel and aviation biofuels, biological isoprene, and soybean-based polyurethane. Demonstration projects have also been initiated involving the fermentation of marine fungus to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), movable biodiesel installations, wood-plastic composites, biogas, cellulose lithium-ion battery separators, and bio-phloroglucinol. 

    The Institute has seven CAS- and provincial-level innovation units: the CAS Key Laboratory of Biofuels, the CAS Key Laboratory of Bio-based Materials, the CAS Supercomputing Environment (Qingdao Branch), the CAS National Science Library’s Special Library for Bioenergy Research, the Shandong Key Laboratory of Energy Genetics, the Shandong Industrial Engineering Laboratory of Biogas Production & Utilization, and the Shandong International Science and Technology Cooperation Center; and five municipal-level research centers.  

    The institute has a staff of 729, 446 of whom are full-time employees. Fifty-two percent of the institute’s personnel have doctoral degrees, and 90 employees hold senior professional or technical positions. In addition, 45 professors have received awards from national, provincial, and CAS talent programs. QIBEBT has obtained 845 competitive research projects, with total funding reaching 702 million CNY (103 million USD), of which 20 percent is from industry.  

    QIBEBT offers PhD programs in biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, chemical engineering and technology, and materials science and engineering; nine master’s degree programs; and one postdoctoral program in biological sciences.  

    QIBEBT attaches high importance to promoting international communication and cooperation. Under the banner of “Communication brings cooperation, cooperation brings innovation”, QIBEBT has established strategic and stable partnerships with more than 20 globally renowned universities, research organizations, enterprises, and academic associations. With its partners, QIBEBT has established joint laboratories, engaged in academic exchange and training of research staff and postgraduates, and conducted collaborative research projects, regular seminars and conferences. Working with our worldwide partners, QIBEBT aims to establish a global partnership for excellence in green energy and materials for a sustainable Earth.
