Dr. LI Chaoxu is the Professor of Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and leading the Laboratory of Biomimetic Smart Materials (BioSM Lab). He received his PhD degree in polymer chemistry and physics from Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004. Following the post-doctoral research in self-assembly of block copolymers in Pohang University of Science and Technology and University of Fribourg, he shifted his research in 2009 to self-assembly of proteins and biomimetic functional materials in the Lab of Food and Soft Materials, ETH Zurich. In 2014 he moved back to CAS and took the current position. Dr. Li has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals including Nature Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Nanoscale, Chemical Communications, Macromolecules etc., which were either highlighted by scientific journals such as Nature Nanotechnology and American Chemical Society journals, or commented by scientific websites, television news channel and newspapers.

The BioSM Lab was founded in March, 2014. There are 2 research staffs at present. The scientific backgrounds of group members range from biology, biological materials, polymer physics and chemistry to nanotechnology.

Research Focus

We aim to fundamentally understanding the structure-property relationships of marine and terrestrial bio-based materials and their applications. 

  • Hierarchically structural basis of super properties of natural biomaterials.
  • Nano-structuring and self-assembly of biological macromolecules, including proteins, polysaccharides etc..
  • Structurally biomimetic materials, including functional composites, fibrous and membrane materials and smart interfacial materials.
