Heterogeneous Catalytic Conversion

Prof. LI received his Ph.D. degree in Technical Chemistry at TU München in 2004. Prof. LI worked first as postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley from 2005 to 2007 and then as “Senior Scientist” at TU München from 2007 to 2010. His main research interest is heterogeneous catalytic conversion of substantially available raw materials to modern energy products. He is also extensively explore the reaction mechanisms, micro-kinetics and catalytically active surface structures. In recent 5 years, Prof. LI has more than 20 publications at academic journals.

Research Activities 

1. Aviation biofuel from bioethanol 

The aim of this project is to develop a continuous reacting unit that converts diluted bioethanol to Jet Fuel, a blend of hydrocarbons with 1) straight and branched alkanes, 2) naphthenes and 3) aromatics. The bioethanol is dehydrated to ethylene under atmospheric pressure. A part of the ethylene is oligomerized to olefins with 9-16 carbon chains, followed by hydrotreating to produce the alkanes and naphthenes. The rest is converted to aromaticswith 6-9 carbon chains. 


2. Oxidative dehydrogenation of lactic acid to pyruvic acid 

The optimized Mo0.61V0.31Nb0.08Ox gave the high selectivity of pyruvic acid (Fig. a). In addition, the selectivity of pyruvic acid decreased with increasing lactic acid conversion, as a result of secondary oxidation of tri-carbon acids to acetic acid and carbon dioxide (Fig. b). Throughout the catalytic mechanism, amorphous [Mo(V,Nb)]5O14 domains showed to be more active, overall, than α-MoO3 and VO2 crystal phases (Figs. c, d and e). 


3. Emission treatment system 

To design highly efficient SOx scrubber and NO conversion catalysts for the exhaust gas treatment for ship or power plant with low pressure drop and operation cost, to meet the new strict international exhaust emission standards, sponsored by Qingdao Municipal Science and Technology Commission.
