Abstract:
The reducing of fossil resource and social concerns in greenhouse gas emission are promoting the development of alternative energy based on renewable source. As alternative fuel to petroleum that more than 60% is consumed in transportation, bioenergy is clearly the only sustainable low cost bio-converted resource and can substitute into transportation fuels with a large enough scale. However, as widely recognized cellulosic bioethanol production is limited by inadequate technology.
The commercialization of cellulosic bioethanol will depend on development of new ‘ideal’ pretreatment and application its bioconversion process to diverse sources of lignocellulosic biomass. That means improving pretreatment procedures, which is more efficient and effective cellulose accessibility to enzyme, is the critical first step to accelerate bioethanol commercialization.
Our pretreatment is one of the promising recent developments. The pretreatment is able to completely remove lignin from a wide range of lignocelluloses with proper size reduction and increase the cellulose accessibility to enzyme for the production of fermentable sugars. The pretreatment is investigated with various biomass feedstocks such as rice straw, corn stove, and wood wastes. Its effectiveness is evaluated by enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation.
